Wichita Falls, TX, United States (4E) – Two teenagers were shot while walking home from school in Texas last week and according to police reports, one of them died while the other one survived.

A 20-year-old man, named Kody Austin Lott, was arrested after being accused of shooting the two teens. He remains in jail as of Monday on three counts including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a prohibited weapon.

Wichita Falls Police Chief Manuel Borrego said in a statement that Lott confessed to the shooting after he was arrested on Sunday.

The victims were identified as Lauren Landavazo and her friend Makayla Smith. Both are 13 years old and Landavazo died from her gunshot wound. Smith is said to be in stable condition now.

Landavazo has been taking the route home since she was in seventh grade. Her family and her friends are now mourning for her tragic loss. They do not know the motive behind the shooting. She reportedly loved walking home every day as she would walk with her friends. Landavazo reportedly had a boyfriend who would walk her halfway home.

A family friend named Kenya Daughtry said in a statement , “She was a ray of sunshine. She was always, always happy. She would eat dinner at home and then come have dinner at our house with our kids. She just wanted to be surrounded by family and friends at all times.”

Landavazo ‘s father said, “I was saying a prayer earlier today and asking her to come and help support me. And then I realized I don’t have to do that. She’s already here. She’s already what’s helping me stay strong.”

Officials have not released details yet about the court appearance of the suspect.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Landavazo in order to help with the funeral expenses.
