Tequesta, FL, United States (4E) – A 19-year-old Florida State University student is accused of killing a couple outside of their home and trying to eat one of the victims’ face.
Authorities said on Tuesday that the student, Austin Harrouff , also wounded a neighbor who was trying to stop him. Harrouff stabbed the couple, who are not related to him. Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said in a statement that Harrouff is a former high school football defensive lineman and wrestler. He reportedly may have been under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs when he attacked the couple, identified as 53-year-old Michelle Mishcon and 59-year-old John Stevens.
Harrouff’s family said that they were waiting for dinner to be served at a restaurant called Duffy’s near where the killings happened. However, Harrouff stormed off due to the slow service. His parents reportedly felt that something was off and called police officials as well as his fraternity brothers at around 8:30 P.M. in an attempt to find him before he could harm anyone.
He was found 45 minutes later and the stabbing was a random act. Neighbor Jeff Fisher, 47, called 911 at 9:20 P.M. to report the attack. Fisher was stabbed five times as he attempted to rescue the couple.
The couple was reportedly attacked at the garage of their home as they like to sit there at night. When the first deputy arrived at the home of the couple, she used a taser on Harrouff but it did not seem to affect him. She then tried to pull Harrouff of Stevens’ body as the suspect was biting the face of the deceased man. She was unsuccessful in trying to separate Harrouff from Stevens.
Snyder added that Harrouff was abnormally strong even if he is 6-feet-tall and weighs 200 pounds. They believe that Harrouff was on drugs during the attack but as per hospital blood tests, there were no traces of cocaine, heroin, or methamphetamine. hallucinogenic drugs like Flakka or bath salts were possibly used.
Deputies who responded at the scene said that something was agitating Harrouff before the attack and on their way to a local hospital, he began making animal sounds. Snyder said that these characteristics are at par with people taking bath salts or Flakka . ‘
Harrouff is a sophomore at the aforementioned university and is majoring in exercise science. Stevens and Mishcon reportedly enjoyed boating. Stevens also had a lawn service.
The motive remains unclear. Harrouff remains in the local hospital where he is being monitored and accordingly, his condition is deteriorating. It is unknown if he was injured in the stabbing.
