Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte just landed a new endorsement deal but amid the great news, it has been confirmed that the Olympian has been charged by Brazilian authorities.

The charge that he is facing is falsely reporting a crime. Rio Police’s chief requested a letter to be sent to Lochte explaining the legal process that he will have to undergo. The 12-time Olympic medalist will have to go to Rio to face the charges. Lochte , however, could opt to send a lawyer on his behalf instead of appearing in court himself.

The 32-year-old could face one to six months behind bars if convicted but he could also be fined. Lochte will also have the opportunity to appeal regarding future decisions.

Lochte said in a statement before that armed men who posed as police officials robbed him and three other swimmers at gunpoint. He said that one of the men pointed his gun directly at the swimmer. He then retracted his statement later saying that he over exaggerated the facts.

The four swimmers were at a gas station and damaged a sign that caused confrontation with the armed security guards. They were then asked to pay a fee making the robbery claim false. Also, the gun was not pointed directly at him but at their direction.

As for Lochte’s new endorsement deals, it was reported that he is now the face of Pine Bros. Softish Throat Drops. This is after Lochte’s contracts with Speedo USA, Ralph Lauren, and two more companies no longer wanted to have ties with the Olympian.

Pine Bros. CEO Rider McDowell reportedly reached out to Lochte . A press release from the company says, “We all make mistakes, but they’re rarely given front-page scrutiny. He’s a great guy who has done in credible work with charities. I’m confident that Pine Bros. fans will support our decision to give Ryan a second chance.”
