San Francisco, CA, United States (NewsBahn) – The NFL’s San Francisco 49ers will give $1 million to two area groups in an effort to take on social ills and help police and the community come together in the area.
“What we want to do is make a donation of $1 million between two groups — the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the San Francisco Foundation — to really help bridge the gap, create better collaboration between law enforcement and local communities,” team CEO Jed York said, according to ESPN.
York said the team’s donation is separate from the Colin Kaepernick situation, in which the quarterback said he’ll donate all the proceeds from sales of his jerseys, though he hasn’t said where the funds will go.
Kaepernick initially caused controversy with his stance of sitting on the bench or kneeling during the playing of the national anthem due to what he sees are social ills in the country due to racism.
“I’m not sure if he’s figured out where he’s putting his money,” York said. “It’s separate from what Colin is doing, regardless of who is on the football team.”
