New York, NY, United States (4E Sports) – The NFL has suspended New England Patriots starting defensive end Rob Ninkovich for four games after he tested positive for a banned substance.
In a statement, the NFL said Ninkovich will be suspended for the first four games of the 2016 regular season without pay. He is eligible to return from his suspension on Monday, Oct. 3.
In a statement, Ninkovich said he was devastated and shocked, and said he would never knowingly take an illegal substance.
“Few things are more important to me than my name and reputation. This might call that into question for some, which has me heartbroken,” Ninkovich said.
“I don’t want to cut any corners. I want to do things the right way, with high integrity, and that’s what I have always wanted to stand for,” he added.
A team captain in 2015, Ninkovich is known for his pass-rushing ability (47 career sacks, including playoffs) and toughness to set the edge against the run.
The Patriots will start start veteran Chris Long, who signed with the Patriots after spending the first eight years of his career with the Rams, in his place.
“My focus is on getting back to 100 percent and being the best teammate and Patriot I can be upon my return,” Ninkovich said.
