Albuquerque, NM, United States (4E) – New details about the killing of a 10-year-old in New Mexico have emerged and officials said that she was drugged and sexually assaulted before being killed.

The Albuquerque Police Department called the killing one of the worst cases in their department’s history. There are three suspects in the killing and one of them is the mother of the 10-year-old girl. The mother was identified as 35-year-old Michelle Martens and the other two are 31-year-old Fabian Gonzales, the boyfriend of Martens and Jessica Kelley, also 31, who is the cousin of Gonzales.

Authorities said that Martens and Gonzales confessed to injecting the 10-year-old girl with meth so she would come down and do what they wanted to do to her daughter. Gonzales and Kelley reportedly sexually assaulted the 10-year-old before she was stabbed and strangled to death.

The victim was not identified but officials said that her body was found wrapped in a blanket inside an apartment complex. The girl was killed a day after she turned 10. The friends and some close neighbors of the family reportedly planned to celebrated the girl’s birthday after school.

Police spokesman Tanner Tixier said that the mother did not appear to show any kind of remorse when interviewed by officials. Tixier added, “I can’t speak to what this mother was planning for her child other than the horrific events that happened to this child. I would find it hard to believe that she was planning a birthday party for this child.”

Gonzales and Kelly are facing several charges such as criminal sexual penetration of a minor and child abuse resulting in great bodily harm or death. Gonzales and Martens also face charges related to kidnapping.

Kelley reportedly has an extensive criminal record. Some of the offenses committed by her are battery, assaulting a police officer, DWI , and shoplifting.

Governor Susana Martinez said in a statement, “There are no words that can convey the sorrow and sadness I feel for the innocent child who was killed in this atrocious attack. What happened to this little girl is unspeakable, and justice should come down like a hammer on the monster who committed this murder.”
