Mother alleged of suffocating 12-month-old son, then killed self

York, PA, United States (4E) – A Pennsylvania mother is alleged of suffocating her 12-month-old son then killed herself after and now police officials are investigating the matter.

As per the preliminary investigation, the 40-year-old mother is believed to have intentionally suffocated her son. The case is being treated as a murder-suicide. The bodies of the mother and the baby were found by officials who were dispatched to the home for a welfare check. The home is located at Shrewsbury Township and the welfare check was made on Monday.

The mother was identified as Sheri Shermeyer and the baby is said to be named John. Shermeyer was found lying in her bed and a gunshot wound to the head was discovered. It was not stated where the baby was found but it is believed that he died of asphyxiation.

A coroner was sent at the home at around 2 P.M. and the killing might have taken place an hour earlier. Deputy Coroner Jeffri Goodfellow and Coroner Pam Gay certified the deaths at the scene. It was not clear who called the cops to make a welfare check on the home of Shermeyer .

Autopsies on both mother and son are scheduled for Wednesday at Lehigh Valley Hospital. The investigation is ongoing.
