Aleppo, Damascus, Syria (4E) – A helicopter reportedly dropped two barrel bombs on a funeral wake for children in the Syrian city of Aleppo that killed at least 16 people and it is the same area where 15 more were killed last week.
According to Syrian monitoring groups, the wake was being held on Saturday in the rebel-controlled neighborhood of Bab al-Nayrab . Last week, a barrel bombing was also dropped. There are conflicting reports as to how many people really died in the latest bombing in Aleppo as other sources claimed that there were 24 people killed and at least 30 injured. Another source claimed that a brother and a sister were killed in the bombings.
An Aleppo Media Center activist, Mojahed Abo-Aljood , said in a statement that he was filming near the wake when he heard a warning about a helicopter. He then took shelter in a basement and said that he heard two explosions. He said that he later exited the shelter and grabbed his camera to document the attack and find some survivors so he could aid them.
Abo-Aljood added, “On my right and on my left I saw dead people and I stepped on top of one myself because I couldn’t see due to the thickness of dust. When the first barrel bomb hit near the wake, people started running toward the shelter where we were. Then the second barrel bomb hit near the entrance of the basement shelter. That’s why there were many causalities.”
Other activists posed videos of the barrel bomb attack last week and they claimed that many children were also killed. In the videos, men and women carried dead children covered with dust but the authenticity of the videos are yet to be confirmed. In one video, a man said, “Don’t step over them. I lost my five children, oh God.”
The death toll in Aleppo increased to 448 for August last week. Out of the total number of deaths, 100 are said to be children. In the past two years, around 4,500 children have been killed due to the bombings.
Barrel bobs are oil drums filled with explosives and shrapnel. It is then dropped via an aircraft. Since 2014, barrel bombs have killed more than 3,000 civilians. Accordingly, the Syrian government is being accused of being responsible of such bombings. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad denied the accusations.
