Dinwiddie County, VA, United States (4E) – A grandmother and her great granddaughter were lost for three days while they were on their way to North Carolina to visit relatives for Christmas and according to authorities, the two survived on juice and snacks.

The two are from North Jersey and were found in Virginia. They were identified as Barbara Briley , the grandmother, and La’Myra , the five-year-old great granddaughter. The two left Mays Landing in the morning of Christmas Eve.

Major William Knott of the Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Office found the two in the wooded area in Virginia. He said that the five-year-old asked if she was going to jail upon seeing the officer. He then assured that they were there to rescue and help them. Briley , 71, was asked if she could hear the officers but she only opened and closed her eyes and kept on mumbling. A property owner called police after spotting the vehicle of Briley .

Emergency responders placed Briley on a stretcher and was taken to a field for a helicopter to airlift her to VCU Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. She was listed in serious condition as of Wednesday evening. La’Myra , on the other hand, was released to a family member after undergoing medical evaluation.

Authorities believe that Briley went to Nash Road then on a dirt road. She pulled off into the woods and drove near a small tree. She attempted to back up but her vehicle got stuck. Virginia State Police Sgt . Steve Vick added regarding how the duo survived, “Where they were found by the vehicle, they were some juice boxes, some apples, and some other items. It appears they have been eating and drinking several things during that time period.”

The Briley family asked for privacy but said in a statement, “On behalf of the Briley family we are happy to confirm that Barbara and LaMyra Briley have been found. Thank you everyone who has assisted our family during this time. Our prayers have been answered. We ask at this time if you will respect our privacy and a formal statement will be issued later. God bless you all and thank you again for praying for our family.”
