Orange County, CA, United States (4E) – Police officials confirmed on Thursday that the father and stepmother of the former NASCAR and IndyCar racer Robby Gordon were found dead in their home.

According to reports, Robert Gordon, 68, strangled his wife, Sharon Gordon, 57, then shot himself in their Southern California home. Officials are treating it as a murder-suicide case. The motive about the shooting and the killing is still unclear.

Robby, 47, said that their family is in shock and is grieving. He said that he is so sad and cannot believe what happened. Robby noted that he will be speaking more about the deaths once authorities have concluded their investigation. He thanked the racing community for their support. The father of Robby was a onetime off-road racer and he was the reason why the former NASCAR and IndyCar racer was so passionate about motorsports and competition.

Despite the death of his mother and stepmother, Robby said that an event featuring his off-road racing team scheduled in Orange County this weekend will not be cancelled . Robby now races in an off-road series created by him in 2013 called the Speed Energy Formula Off-Road.

Officials did a welfare check at the request of a relative. The bodies were found inside the home after the 911 call was received on Wednesday afternoon. Accordingly, the family members became concerned when Robert missed a doctor’s appointment. A weapon was also found at the scene.

A friend of the Gordon family, Tim Cecil, said that he is also shocked and what happened was heartbreaking. He pointed out that he knew the Gordons for more than 20 years and raced with Robert. He also said that Robert and Sharon were a nice couple who were fun to hang out with. Cecil added, “There was nothing out of the ordinary.”

The investigation is ongoing.
