Washington, DC, United States (4E) – Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly shared with CNN’s Dana Bash for “State of the Union” on Sunday that he believes President Donald Trump will insist on having a funding for the border wall to separate United States from Mexico.
Bash asked Kelly if he thinks the president will insist on funding the border wall and Kelly said, “I think it goes without saying that the President has been pretty straightforward about his desire and the need for a border wall. So I would suspect he’ll do the right thing for sure, but I would suspect he will be insistent on the funding.” The bill has to be passed by Friday this week in order to prevent a government shutdown from happening.
Kelly had a tour of the border last week. He and Attorney General Jeff Sessions met last week with law enforcement personnel from different agencies in Texas. They are also set to talk with local and state lawmakers on their ideas on how to build the wall once approved.
This is the first time an administration official said outright that he thinks Trump will push for the border wall funding as other senior officials did not comment on the matter or did not say for sure anything about the border wall funding. White House budget director Mick Mulvaney shared with “Fox News Sunday” that the funding for the border wall was one of the many things being negotiated.
Mulvaney also said that he is not yet sure if Trump will sign the budget if it does not include funding for his border wall. He added, “We are asking for our priorities, and importantly, we are offering to give Democrats some of their priorities as well.” For the government shutdown, Mulvaney pointed out that it is not the desired end and it is not a tool.
White House chief of staff Reince Priebus also appeared on “Meet the Press.” Although he did not say what exactly are being talked about over the funding, he was confident in saying that they are sure they will get something that will be satisfactory to the president regarding border security. Priebus also touched on the subject of military spending and rebuilding the military as one of the top priorities of the administration.
