Fresno, CA, United States (4E) – A convicted rapist is accused of critically injuring two officers at a Fresno jail on Saturday morning and now he is charged with attempted murder.

The two officers were shot in the neck and in the head. They remain under critical condition as of Sunday. The former inmate, 37-year-old Thong Vang , now also faces charges of being a felon with a handgun and bringing drugs into a jail. The victims were identified as Correctional Officers Juanita Davila and Toamalama Scanlan .

Officials said that Vang opened fired in a lobby area where around 15 people gathered, including children. Vang reportedly entered the area at around 8:30 A.M. to visit someone. Sheriff Margaret Mims said that Vang was acting strangely as he paced back and forth and attempted to cut a line of people. Davila tried to get Vang to sit down and that was when he pulled out his gun and began firing.

Davila and Scanlan were not armed during the firing. They both had more than 10 years of experience in the county. Other officers then tried to subdue Vang and used a stun gun on him. Shots were fired against Vang and that was when he allegedly gave up and said that he wanted to be arrested. Vang was not injured in the exchange of fire but he was taken to a hospital for minor scrapes and cuts.

Vang was released from prison in 2014 after he spent 16 years behind bars. He spent time for raping minors aged 14 and below. He had no criminal violations since his release so it was unclear what prompted Vang to do such violent act.

The security measures at the Fresno jail are now being investigated.
