Brooklyn man charged with two counts of second-degree murder in deaths of Muslim imam and friend
NY, NY, United States (NewsBahn) – Oscar Morel of Brooklyn was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the deaths of a Muslim imam and his friend in Queens, the New York City Police Department said in a statement sent late Monday.
The 35-year-old suspect was arrested after detectives studied video of the scene and saw Morel entering in a black GMC Trailblazer and driving off shortly after.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city’s police force is poised to bring peace and calm to a concerned Muslim community
“It’s a very rare thing to see a cleric killed, and members of the Muslim community have been on edge because of the atmosphere already that existed in this country, particularly over the last few months in our national debate,” he said.
The mayor also spoke at a funeral ceremony for Imam Maulama Alauddin Akonjee and friend Thara Uddin .
“It doesn’t matter what faith you come from, it doesn’t matter where you live in this city, as one, we feel this pain,” the mayor told about 1,000 people in attendance. “For all those here who want justice, we want justice with you, too, and we will get justice for this community.”
No motive for the incident has been released as of yet, according to a NY Post report.
“Preliminarily, [police] don’t have a motive for the shooting,” a law enforcement source insisted. “They don’t know what it’s about . . . They know it was a hit; the guy came up from behind and shot them. But they don’t have a motive.”
